Denise Davila giving an interview to WWL-TV's Danny Monteverde.

When the city’s Complete Streets plan transformed MacArthur Boulevard in early 2021, Aurora West resident Denise Davila started a community petition, urging city and state transportation officials to study “traffic patterns and commuter habits specifically as they relate to the Algiers area on the West Bank of New Orleans before any further progress of the Bike Lane project is completed.” More than 1,400 people signed the petition. But it was for naught. No studies were done. The protected bike lane design remained in place on MacArthur for more than two years. It took City Council action to have the protected bike lanes removed. The city still has plans for more protected bike lanes in Algiers.

Bicyclists regularly accuse us of being against bike lanes. They're wrong. Many of us enjoy bicycling. We support efforts to keep bicyclists safe and sensible bike lanes. And we hope that residents have a say in how their neighborhoods are reshaped.
